9th Annual Holiday Art Sale

Once again I'll be participating in the Holiday Art Sale at the JDCAC. Please come out to support me!

The Auburn Arts Association and Auburn Parks and Recreation will host the 9th Annual Holiday Art Sale on Saturday, December 12 from 9 a.m. - 4 p.m. at the Jan Dempsey Community Arts Center and Harris Center. This festive and unique shopping experience features local artists selling handmade works including pottery, paintings, photography, pet goods, jewelry, gourmet food stuffs, embroidered and applique goods, candles and much more! Cross off holiday shopping on your to-do list while supporting a great cause. A portion of the proceeds from sales supports the Auburn Arts Association and their art education programs held at the Jan Dempsey Arts Center.

AUMC's 2015 Christmas Market

The 2015 Auburn United Methodist Church's Christmas Market will be held in the AUMC Mathison Building and Epworth Center on 138 South Gay Street in Auburn, Alabama. 

Support local artists, and the AUMC's Mercy Committee and other charities.


I'll be sharing a booth with well known watercolorist, Richard "Dick" Millman. We'll be in the Mathison Lobby in Booth #1. This will be my first year participating in this event.

ADVENTURES IN WRITING: FOLKTALES
• Type of class: writing - folktales /art class
• Description: This new writing course is the second in a series, which combines art
and creative writing. Students will study folktales, and then write and
illustrate their own fabulous stories. Each student can write and illustrate
their work in a traditional manner or in a comic book format. The instructor
has a M.Ed. in Gifted Studies and specializes in small group instruction.
Skill Level, Beginner/Intermediate: No prior experience required.
• Ages: 8 - 12 years old

• Day & Time: Mondays from 3:30 to 5:00 pm

KIDS CAN PAINT: IMPRESSIONISM
• Type of class: painting/mixed-media
• Description: Impressionism is lively paintings that capture a fleeting moment in time. In this class students will explore the artwork of six famous artists: Vincent Van Gogh, Claude Monet, Camille Pissarro, Edgar Degas, Pierre-Auguste Renoir, and Mary Cassatt. Then we will use these artists and their works as a springboard to explore art and creativity. Each artist will have an “inspiration” piece based on their style, use of color, etc. However, each student will be encouraged to explore his or her own artistic style. All supplies will be included. Skill Level, Beginner/Intermediate: No prior experience required.

ANIME DRAWING: MANGA PEOPLE
• Type of class: drawing
• Description: Manga is a Japanese style of comics. In this class we will learn how to draw rocking boys and cool girls. Each student will be encouraged to develop his or her own anime/manga characters and unique style of drawing. Skill Level, Intermediate: Student needs prior drawing experience. Small group instruction. All supplies are included.

ILLUSTRATION GEEKS FAN CLUB

• Description: The Illustration Geeks are back in action! This term everyone will be making their own comic book or manga. Join us on the second and fourth Fridays from 6-8 p.m. to participate in all the fun. A limited number of discounts /scholarships will be available.
• Ages: 12 -17 years old (18 if still in high school)

• Description: Explore the wonderful world of acrylics. In Session 1 we will learn the basics of acrylics, plus an introduction to basic color theory, along with some fun tips and tricks. While in Session 2, we will combine acrylics with other media, and work on some more advanced techniques. You must attend Session 1 in order to attend Session 2. • Description: Learn how to draw awesome dragons! Dragons will be the focus of this class, though other fantasy creatures may be discussed if time allows. Students attending this

                                  IMPORTANT:  Please note that with lessons starting AFTER Spring Break, I won't know my schedule until after March 30th.  I may only be able to place you temporarily at a certain time and date and then once the dust settles, I'll be able to tell you when we can meet for the rest of the term.

                                  Winter Exhibition 2015 - "Art CraZe"

                                  Brenden Designs is proud to announce its Winter 2015 Exhibition, “Art CraZe”.

                                  This gallery show features the art work of twelve young artists and two adult artists, who attended my classes this term. The show will open Monday, March 9th at 3 pm and run until Friday, March 13th, 2015 at 5:45 pm in Studio Two.

                                  To view the exhibition, go to the Jan Dempsey Community Arts Center in Auburn, Alabama. The Dempsey will be open Monday through Friday of next week from 8 am to 9 pm.  Please check with a Dempsey staff member to make sure a class is not going on before viewing the exhibition.

                                  There will be a guest book for comments, flyers of upcoming classes, and show brochures available. Come out, and support these talented artists!

                                  • Description: Get with the geeks! We will be back in force almost every week at the Dempsey again in the spring. The Illustration Geeks are kids ages 10 - 17, who are totally into fandom. While the focus is mostly on anime/manga and comics/comic books, all facets of fandom are celebrated here, including gaming and book crazes. There will be guest speakers, workshops, special events, and more.

                                  LAST CHANCE TO REGISTER FOR WINTER 2015 GROUP CLASSES

                                  ~ CLASSES FOR WINTER 2015 ~
                                  New classes that I’m offering this quarter include: Gifted Enrichment: There Be Dragons, Anime Drawing: Kawaii, The Let’s Focus on Artists of the 1800’s, & the Principles of Design through Mixed-Media.
                                  Classes are held at: The Jan Dempsey Community Arts Center (JDCAC) (334) 501-2963 unless otherwise noted!
                                  You MUST register by calling or going by: The Harris Center (334) 501-2930; hours: M-F 8 to 5 pm
                                  Registration Dates: November 17, 2014 to January 9, 2015
                                  Class Term: January 20 to March 20, 2015
                                  ~ PRIVATE & SEMI-PRIVATE ~
                                  Private & Semi-Private Art Lessons
                                  • Type of class: private & semi-private art lessons
                                  • Description: Artist and educator, Laurie Brenden offers private and semi-private art lessons in addition to her group classes each quarter. A private lesson is for one student. Semi-private lessons are for two students; the students can be siblings, family members, friends, etc. These lessons are available by appointment only and spaces are limited! Please contact her directly for more information or to sign up for private art lessons.

                                  • Class Term: January 20 to March 20, 2015
                                  • Day & Time: by appointment ONLY! 
                                  • Class fee: Private -> $80.00 for lessons (6, 1 hour sessions) plus $20.00 for supplies; Semi-Private -> $60.00 for lessons (6, 1 hour sessions) plus $20.00 for supplies per student

                                  Gifted Enrichment: There Be Dragons
                                  • Type of class: Writing - Mythology/Art class 
                                  • Description: This new gifted enrichment class will combine folk lore, mythology, art, and creative writing. The “There Be Dragons course” is for creatively and artistically gifted students. Students will study dragons and related mythology and folklore and then write and illustrate their own myths and folk tales. The instructor has a M.Ed. in Gifted Studies, and specializes in small group instruction.
                                  • Ages: 8 - 12 years old
                                  • Dates: January 26 to March 9, 2015 (7 weeks)
                                  • Day & Time: Mondays from 4:00 to 5:30 pm
                                  • Class fee: $75.00 (includes supplies)
                                  Let’s Focus on Artists of the 1800’s 
                                  • Type of class: mixed-media/painting
                                  • Description: This new mixed-media class will concentrate on eight famous artists from the 1800’s. Featured artists include: Paul Klee, Pablo Picasso, Georges Braque, Amedeo Modigliani, Diego Rivera, Marcel Duchamp, Marc Chagall, and Chang Daichien. Skill Level: Basic (no prior experience needed) Small group instruction. For more information, please contact the instructor.

                                  • Dates: January 21 to March 11, 2015 (8 weeks)
                                  • Day & Time: Wednesdays from 3:30 to 5:00 pm
                                  • Class fee: $95.00 (includes supplies)
                                  ~ AGES 10 to 15 ~
                                  Anime Drawing: Kawaii
                                  • Type of class: drawing
                                  • Description: Explore the super cute manga genre of Kawaii! These characters are intensely cute, fun to draw, and colorfully graphic. We will even dive the dark side of Kawaii by drawing some creepy and bad to the bone characters. Included topics are lovable anthros, mysterious monsters, gothic, and more. Students taking this class will learn some basic drawing techniques plus cool tips and tricks. Each student will be encouraged to develop his or her own anime characters and unique style of drawing. Skill Level: Intermediate (prior drawing experience preferred.) Small group instruction.

                                  • Dates: January 23 to March 13, 2015 (8 weeks)
                                  • Day & Time: Fridays from 4:30 to 600 p.m. 
                                  • Class fee: $85.00 (includes supplies)
                                  ~ ADULTS & AGES 50+ ~
                                  Principles of Design through Mixed-Media
                                  • Type of class: mixed-media/painting
                                  • Description: Students will be introduced to the elements and principles of design using artwork from throughout history. The principles of design include: balance, movement, 
                                  pattern, and more. They will then apply that knowledge to make mixed-media pieces of their own. Part two of the series; the first class was Elements of Design through 
                                  Drawing. Students can attend this course even if they did NOT participate in part one. Skill Level: Basic: No prior experience needed. Small group instruction.
                                  • Ages: 50 + (All adults welcome)
                                  • Dates: January 21 to March 11, 2015 (8 weeks) 
                                  • Day & Time: Wednesdays from 1:30 to 3:00 pm
                                  • Location: JDCAC
                                  • Class fee: $95.00 (includes supplies)
                                  ~ FAN CLUB ~
                                  Illustration Geeks
                                  • Type of class: anime-comics fan club
                                  • Description: Get with the geeks! We will be back in force almost every week at the Dempsey again in the winter. The Illustration Geeks are kids ages 10 - 17, who are totally into fandom. While the focus is mostly on anime/manga and comics/comic books, all facets of fandom are celebrated here. There will be guest speakers, workshops, special events, and more. While most things will be free; there will be a small charge for some special events. 
                                  • Ages: 10 – 17 years old
                                  • Day & Time: Fridays, January 16 to March 13, 2015 from 6:30 to 8:30 pm
                                  • Class fee: Free (there will be a small charge for special events)

                                  Registration is now open! If you are interested in taking Private Art Lessons or Semi-Private Art Lessons with me during the Winter 2015 term, please let me know ASAP!

                                  IMPORTANT: Please note that with lessons starting AFTER the Christmas holidays, I won't know my schedule until after the New Year. I may only be able to place you temporarily at a certain time and date and then once the dust settles, I'll be able to tell you when we can meet for the rest of the term.

                                  * Supply Fees: Supplies run $15.00 to $30.00 depending on the unit and the media chosen.

                                  Important Information: You MUST contact me first! If you just register that does NOT guarantee you a spot! Remember that returning students will have first priority; students who have been with me the longest get placed first. Then if I have any room I will place other returning students and new students. I have already been fielding a lot of calls from new people who are interested in private & semi-private lessons, so if you are interested let me know as soon as you can! You can either call or e-mail me.

                                  If you would like to register for the Winter term I will need the following information
                                  * When you would like to start.
                                  * How many weeks you would like to sign up for. I recommend 6-8 weeks.
                                  * The top 3 times and days that work best for you. (I can’t guarantee that you will get in on of your first choices.
                                  * What medium & unit you (or your child) is interested in.
                                  * Just a reminder that not only do I have to operate within your schedule, I do have other commitments and a part-time tutoring job, and we also have to work with the Dempsey’s calendar and available space.
